In Memoriam Dr. Julian Jakob Bussgang

American Friends of POLIN Museum mourns the loss of Dr. Julian Jakob Bussgang, a dear friend and a longtime supporter of POLIN Museum, who passed away on September 16, 2023, at the age of 98.

He was born in 1925 in Lwów, Poland.  In mid-September 1939, Julian fled with his parents and sister, to Romania, and then to Palestine. It was there that he joined the Polish 2nd Corps, which was led by General Władysław Anders, and became a part of the British Army. With Anders' Army he fought in the battles of Monte Cassino, Ancona, and Bologna. After the War he moved to England, and in 1949 to the United States where he received his MSEE degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard. At MIT he published his thesis which later became known as "The Bussgang Theorem." He later became the founder and president of Signatron, Inc., an electronics communication company.

Julian with his wife, Fay, for decades were supporting and memorializing the history of Polish Jewry. He served as a board member of the National Polish-American, Jewish-American Council (sponsored by the American Jewish Committee), and a board member of the American Association for Polish-Jewish Studies. Together with his wife, they were honorary members of the Association of Children of the Holocaust in Poland.

In honor of Dr. Bussgang's army service and leadership in supporting Polish-Jewish relations after the war, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Poland in 2011 by President Bronislaw Komorowski.

We are forever grateful for the support of Julian and his wife Fay, who have been donors of POLIN Museum throughout the years.

May his memory be a blessing.
